Rikki the number of people claiming sickness benefits has risen massively, it's rising every year. They have to do something and those things will include ensuring you get the surgery you're waiting for, the treatment plan you need, opportunities to try work for a short period to see if you can cope, supported work for 16 hours a week. Various different schemes because once you've been off for a year or two it really is hard to go back to work and you worry about the cliff edge facing you if you can't cope. We don't have the details yet, but I am guessing that you won't lose your benefits for the first couple of months you're working, or you will, but if work can't happen because the employer doesn't make reasonable adjustments they said they would (like a ramp for your wheelchair) and you have to leave, you can get them back again quickly. This is one of the reasons he wants Job Centre to be local again and have employees who know the area and know what's availalbe. He wants jobs on boards and not just sending people away to look on the internet for work. Hi Hild, I think the introduction of the minimum wage has forced employers to cut jobs, especially in regards to the know nothing younger generations. Many being paid job seekers allowance with no intention of really wanting a job and are scrounging off their parents , many of which feed them just to sit on their arses all day playing with mobile phones. I am a strong supporter of vocational training at school from secondary schools onwards, like China and Japan etc.

Hi Hild, this is also due to be addressed here any time soon. Many people here choose various suicidal ways of death by various means of course they don't need assistance, I think legalization of assisted dying could be open to exploitation . I had a younger brother he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, he signed himself into mental health institution, on his last day he tried to drown himself and failed after 7 attempts, when that failed he signed himself out, he was found a few hours later hung by his belt, my mother asked that institution why they let him leave, they replied the couldn't stop him as he hadn't committed any crime, I was 27 then, it doesn't look like people like him with depression are any better treated now to me, maybe my opinion is a little biased and twisted?

My youngest brother (6 years older than me) spent some time in various mental health institutions, although not voluntarily, and he too was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He was very manic at times and led us and the authorities a merry dance, and he also tried to drown himself on a few occasions - quite difficult given that he was a strong swimmer. They eventually put him on medication which calmed him down, but every now and then he would stop taking the tablets and have a relapse. Years later, after he had moved to Switzerland, his diagnosis was amended to schizoaffective disorder and his medication changed. He was quite stable after that, but convinced himself he was dying from lithium poisoning and went a bit crazy again. Then he started to suffer from some mystery ailment and, because he thought it was due to the lithium, didn't bother to consult a doctor until he was at death's door, by which time it was too late to do anything about the cancer which finished him off just after his 76th birthday. All things considered, I suppose he did well to survive to that age.

Hi all, my sister had a shock today, she found out her life insurance was cancelled when she was 75 with no refund . Apparently lots of life insurance companies stop paying out between the ages 70-75. So if you want to renew your life insurance you have to reinsure yourself again, strange that these companies can use the confusing word "life"

As I said above, abolishing the section 21 procedure will be an 'own goal' unless landlords can be sure they can get tenants out quickly when they stop paying rent. I met a former landlord the other day who said it is bad enough with section 21 in place; even then it can take up to six months to get tenants out, and in the meantime they just sit tight paying nothing. I don't know how common this is but he put off a friend who has moved in with her partner and was thinking of letting her flat rather than selling it. So that's one fewer home for a tenant in an area of great shortage.

'Smug' is a bit unkind, but if people are buying electric cars to be 'green' I dare say they won't mind.
