Oh dear, the idea that patients will have to pay seems depressing to me! I suppose it would cost less than keeping someone in a nursing home, an inevitable end for many dying people. Even the best palliative care can’t always bring relief, sadly.

You can see what's on the horizon. Care will be massively scaled down, more costly, and those who need it will be viewed as cumbersome, or worse, a complete nuisance.

Oh dear, this worries me. There will be no option for ‘assisted death’ for them because they lack capacity, so will be trapped in a living hell.

Within the bill there is the clause that a proxy can act on your behalf. This is felt to mean that if you had Alzheimers and then developed cancer your proxy can request Assisted Suicide.
People with Alzheimers or Dementia would not normally be offered cancer treatment as the first is a terminal illness but one that can take years to reach that point. It is also felt that you would not be able to cope with the treatment. That is debatable.
However people with learning disabilities may also come under this category. Health equality for this group is a difficult area as we saw in the pandemic, where not one person with learning disabilities was admitted to ITU and the numbers dying of covid in side rooms was very high compared to other groups. They were essentially sedated and left to see what happened.
This is very dangerous because if one of the arguments for assisted suicide is that it would save people from an horrendous death we would either be choosing to make people with learning disabilities face an awful end or someone in their family or care home would be deciding for them. You have to fight very hard to get cancer treatment for people with LDs now. Most doctors thoughts on quality of life do not extend to the simple joys of life and they still in 2024 don't think disabled people have any.
It terrifies me that we could be slipping into eugenics. I think proxy should be removed from the bill.
