It was said earlier this year that Trump's increased popularity wasn't because people liked him any more, indeed he was less popular than four years ago. But people said they would rather have him than Biden! Of course this might have changed following th shooting, but it is also possible that Harris will their get votes simply because she is a candidate they don't dislike! She's already 2 points ahead in the polls.

I am thinking of what she said about Trump, associating him with criminal types she had prosecuted. In the UK that would probably not go down well, but perhaps in the USA it would upset only those Trump supporters who would not vote for her anyway?

I don't really see that as any different to Sunak continuously going on about Labour putting taxes up by £2,000 per person per year even when he had been told that this was not verifiably true. Or Cleverly saying Labour would let millions in, when they were the party (Tory) who let several million in on work visas. We may be more polite about it for the most part, but the darts are there. The phrase savaging a dead sheep comes to mind.
You only had to see Mordaunt going hell for leather on the debates spouting any old tosh and shouting people down to confirm that. Harris is not lying when she points out that Trump is a convicted person. People here wouldn't be wrong in pointing out that Sunak got fined for covid parties and had tried to avoid paying his full tax in the UK. They wouldn't be wrong, but they didn't keep saying that. In fact, hardly anyone responded to his desperate pleas that he did such a lot for everyone in covid. A roll of the eyes was all that was required.
Then Starmer was only trying to convince about 30 million people to vote, Harris and Trump have to convince many more than that and subtle nuanced conversation is hard to communicate on that mass level. Hence the phrases they all chant over and over again. Those phrases aren't even as complicated as the average football chant here, which says a lot.

We heard and saw a great deal of Vance in these past days and amazingly, in a very short time, he's become quite familiar.
Sadly, I really didn't think that in four years, I'd ever even heard Harris speak! Now that I have, I find her very impressive - I think (and hope) she stands a good chance. It'll be uphill.

Well Trump has picked Vance, but he is married to a Hindu and that is not going down very well with some of the Trump acolytes.
It's all very vile isn't it.

The sort of person who disapproves of a non-Christian spouse is unlikely to turn to Harris for their vote, I suspect. The US sniping is considerably worse than any I’ve heard here because it is so personal. The name calling is unbelievable.

I think Trump said yesterday that Harris isn't really black, she just says she is to fulfil a quota.
Simone Biles tweeted that she loves her black job.

This morning (on 'Today') an analyst said that at the moment and despite the polls, Trump has edged ahead in these marginal states.

You have to pity the US. They have to elect one of these two.

It amazes me that when Trump describes Harris as a lunatic, she doesn't point out that there's only one lunatic in the race - and it isn't her. Trump's bizarre rant in the TV debate has spawned some wonderful memes on social media, such as this one -

It amazes me that people listen to Trump, given his obvious (well, to me) lunatic rantings. But I even know someone, British, who thinks he is great!
US voters are being reminded of some of the blunders Harris has made while speaking in the past, and some of her previously-aired ideas won't hold water now - but no, she can hardly be said to be a lunatic.
Yesterday the BBC was hearing from someone who said Muslims didn't trust her over the Middle East and were voting for Trump on teh ground that the devil you know was better than the one who says the right things but does on to back what they see as the enemy. If true, that will make a difference in the key states; even mass abstentions by previous Democratic voters could easily swing things.
