My son ,in Bordeaux, has a new apple phone. It, in common with so many phones today does a lot more than phone calls. It is voice operated and has a friend called Siri. Ask him any question and in a split second he will answer. Where is the nearest Thai resturant Siri? I have located two near where you are. One at ........ Who won the 1949 football cup,Siri? Which hotel in Chorelywood do you recommend Siri? in fact anything.....yes we tried him on the meaning of life! www.apple.com/ios/siri/

Another feature of A minors phone. It has an entry code but not like other mobiles....it's his thumb-print. Without that the phone is useless. It's no good me hankering for one, as I can't afford it and couldn't operate it!

4d? Has it gone up then? Used to be 2d... Press button B...
No point in my desiring a smartphone - I hate the telephone anyway. The way it demands to be answered, and stops you doing anything else when you do answer it.

Sounds like good fun Arena, a bit like a butler without the raised eyebrow and a put upon expression. Not that I have any experience of smart phones or butlers I might add. ;D

After reading this thread I idly pressed the microphone button on Google Search on my Android phone, I've never tried that before.
Who won the 1949 football cup, I asked.
Wolverhampton Wanderers, apparently. It gave me a Wikipedia page for the match, it didn't tell me the answer verbally. On the other hand when I asked what the population of Bristol is, it spoke the answer along with the written sentence on the screen.
I'm slightly taken aback, I had no idea my phone could do things like that. As for Chorleywood it pulled up the right Tripadvisor page in response which makes sense.
I'll take it to the kitchen, photograph the inside of my fridge and ask for a recipe which uses what it can see. I know the answer already - cheese omelette. I bet that'll sort the androids from the apples.

I hope it factored in the 10% or so who are here but not on any radar regarding tax or anything else!
I think it is the same lot that are banging on about the PRZ's

Voice Search gave its source, 411,000 in 2011 from the census return that year. I've no idea why Bradley Stoke is included in the figure for Bristol though, it's a town out in the wilderness of Gloucestershire as far as I'm concerned.
What's a PRZ?

Bradley Stoke has BRISTOL as its Post Town. A (randomly chosen) address would be: Bradley Stoke Community School Fiddlers Wood Lane Bradley Stoke BRISTOL BS32 9BS
Fiddlers Wood, eh? Hmmm

So, to be honest, has Congresbury on the Yeo in Somerset... Congresbury BRISTOL BS49 5BL That's from www.royalmail.com/postcode-finderand Congresbury is way out past Backwell, past even Cleeve, nobody could possibly say it's part of the City and County of Bristol. It's just, as you say, included in the post designation. Bradley Stoke, on the other hand, despite being the far side of the M4/M5 and blatantly part of Gloucestershire, nevertheless gets included in Bristol's statistics and gets representation on the council. It never used to, it never ought to but it does.

What county of Bristol? Comes under Avon, doesn't it? Not that I give a toss about the counties since they were all messed around with and finally became redundant in addressing. The Royal Mail for some unaccountable reason stoutly maintained that there was still a Middlesex despite its disappearance in the early 1970s.

Count me as dead common - I hadn't heard that! Is Tyne and Wear still going? Did Rutland make a comeback? I confess I gave up on counties a long time ago, fed up with the tinkering that went on. This village was in Buckinghamshire when I moved here forty years ago (this month!) - then suddenly it lurched into Berkshire where it still is...
