One of the parties is promising to end charges for parking at hospitals. Given that it is very difficult to find a space to park now can you imagine what it would be like if there was no charge

We have no hospital parking charges in our hospitals and no chaos.

Given that it is very difficult to find a space to park now can you imagine what it would be like if there was no charge When we first moved here there were no parking charges and people apparently used the hospital as a ‘park and ride’, catching buses to the town centre. There was nowhere to park most of the time whereas now we can at least find a space, and parking is a lot cheaper than taxis, which is how some people have to travel. Various solutions have been proposed to ensure free parking is only for patients and other bona fide hospital visitors, but they all sound very convoluted.

I think you have hit the nail on the head, make it free and genuine visitors stand no chance. Our park and ride service goes through the hospital (which is the main one for the County) so that relieves the pressure, it is actually cheaper than parking in the hospital car park. Those going for an appointment can go anything up to two hours beforehand to get a space Curiously I am currently using a wheelchair and can always find a disabled space

Can't they issue tokens and tow away anyone who hasn't one?
Fly parking at a hospital is a bit like rubbish dumping at a cemetery.

How would you get the tokens? You would not be able to get them in advance if you were visiting A&E or a patient in a ward. The former might be able to issue a token at the registration desk but not the visitor. A machine at the entrance, so you had to key in the patient’s name and ward? The parks would still have to be barrier operated I think. If hospitals had to employ a warden on top of losing their car park money it would be a double blow.

With hospital admission paper ( including a visitor permit). A*******les who illegally parked would be deterred by being clamped.

How about this suggestion? Hospital entrance and exit are barrier-controlled. A registration plate reader records every vehicle going in, and calculates how long you've been there on exit. If you've got proof of seeing a doctor, then your stay is free. Otherwise you have to pay the appropriate charges.

I think the problem arises because of lack of space around the hospitals which are mainly in built up areas with limited space anyway and where hospitals have expanded in that limited space We have the park and ride starting from a new site on the outskirts of the city with plenty of space, and a route that goes through the hospital grounds

The hospitals that charge £4 an hour are to blame, I think. Our hourly charge is about £1.60, free for half an hour and reducing with length of stay. It works out cheaper than the bus for most, and certainly taxis.

Ours charges £2.80, minimum charge, for 3 hours

Do you get a free half hour? It really is useful if all you are doing is dropping off or collecting someone or something. Or on those days when you come in to find the clinic has been cancelled.

No, there is a free dropping off point so I suppose somebody could go in and check if the appointment was still ok. But it's a huge place with lots of staff so I don't think clinics get cancelled - if a consultant is not available there are others to step in

What, you’ve never got the day wrong? I once went went to visit a patient but found she had just been discharged. I managed to get back to the pay point within the half hour.
