My great passion, as a schoolboy, was cigarette cards. I loved collecting sets, studying the pictures for ages and learning from the blurb on the reverse. It was an obsession. (yes, I was a little geek)

An occasional game was Knacker Stretch, played by two people (boys, obviously) with knives.
You faced each other and one of you had to throw a knife into the ground. If it stuck, the other put a foot there and then threw his knife. If the knife didn't stick he could keep his feet where they were. You carried on until one of you couldn't keep his balance any longer.
It was played at school, but not very often because it wasn't very good; I think much of the appeal was in the ridiculousness of it. It was like Twister, but with knives.
I never liked Conkers since it didn't seem to matter whether or not you could hit the other player's conker with yours; it was all down to which conker was hardest.
We had a Basketball craze when the Harlem Globetrotters were on TV one time. It lasted about 2 weeks, if that.
The best ones were football games that lasted a week, with the score always reverting back - so if the score is 2-0 and the losing side scored it went back to 1-0; that way it was easier to remember, and there were never any arguments about where we were the next time the game was picked up - not that anyone really cared about the score (games are best when the result isn't important). In winter we played with a tennis ball on a tarmac tennis court, in summer on the grass as normal. In one place where a ball wasn't allowed we played with a chunk of coal.
