Wanted for murder is on my all time best films. Starring Eric Portman is as good as any Hitchcock thrillers.

Wanted for murder is on my all time best films. Starring Eric Portman is as good as any Hitchcock thrillers.
Adapted by Emeric Pressburger.
I watched it twice over one weekend once (also And Then There were None, also twice, over the same weekend).
Eric Portman was good in A Canterbury Tale, another film written by Pressburger (and a couple more P&P films). He's good.

* A largely forgotten afternoon gem from Thames Tv that ran for several years which followed the goings on at 35 Mafeking Terrace, a large Victorian house converted into bed sits. There were 2 main characters landlady Dorothy Lawson played by Sylvia Kay (Penny's mum in just good friends) and long term resident Brian Marshall (Spindoe) and the scenario of rented accommodation allowed for a regular mix of new characters with episodes focusing on various tenants escapades. It had a high calibre of writing with TV greats such as Fay Weldon, Willis Hall and Trevor Preston contributing and boasting a cast including Jill Gascoine, Bryan Marshall, Brian Cox, Bernard Hill, Bill Dean, Nigel Havers, Miriam Karlin, Alfie Bass, Lewis Collins, Jan Francis, Tessa Wyatt, Arthur Brough (Are you being served) and strangely Brian Protheroe who had a hit in the 70's with the song Pinball) - Sure to find a new audience when it begins a run on the UK channel Talking Pictures TV in the summer.

10:45 INQUEST (1940) 12:00 FLOCKTON FLYER (1977) Premiere* 12:30 THE TWO-HEADED SPY (1958) 14:30 BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE (1948) 16:45 BLESS THIS HOUSE (1972) 18:30 ABOVE US THE WAVES (1955) 20:30 GUNS OF DARKNESS (1962) Premiere
*After being evicted from the family car-repair business, the Carters get involved in the re-opening and running of the Flockton to Lane End railway, an old branch line that's been disused for years. The star of the show is a vintage ex-Great Western locomotive called, for the series, "The Flockton Flyer".
After the eviction, the Carters set up home in Flockton Station, meeting up with a tramp by the name of Bill Jelly, who's been living in a track-side hut. Before being allowed to move in to the station, Bob Carter makes an agreement with Commander Frost (Chairman of the railway re-opening society) that he'll get the engine and the track ready for re-opening. Some of the locals are not happy about the re-opening plans, and there's a falling-out with farmer Joe Pratt, and vandalism to be dealt with too. One adventure involves a train robbery, where "The Flyer" is used to trap the crooks until the local police can be summoned. In the final episode of series 1, all's ready for the opening day, complete with band, bunting and cakes, but "The Flyer" goes missing!
The second series (by when the Carters have moved out to Crowcombe, because Flockton station is now in use) involves an argument with local landowner, The Duke of Flockton, resolved by a memorable race between "The Flockton Flyer" and the Duke's locomotive. Later episodes concern the visit of a film crew to the Flockton line, cattle rustling, a dispute with the local fox hunters, the running away of Jessica, the younger Carter daughter, and finally a story about the Carters helping a group of travelling families to find a home after they'd been made unwelcome elsewhere.
Much of the filming was done on the West Somerset Railway, set in the glorious countryside between the Quantock Hills and Exmoor. The resulting images are memorable for their high visual quality. The locomotive, otherwise known, prosaically, as No 6412, really looks the part. This would be a real treat for railway preservation fans and lovers of the English countryside. Filmed, location sequences are more prominent in the second series than the first.
The stories are gentle adventures, not without dramatic moments and there's always plenty of pace. The characters are well-drawn and acted. David Neal's Bob Carter is calm and resolute in the face of adversity. Actors who would later become far more widely known appeared - Peter Duncan (Blue Peter) and Gwyneth Strong (Only Fools And Horses) play Jimmy and Jan Carter. Phil Daniels (EastEnders) makes an appearance. Other well known names who show-up include Sheila (Likely Lads) Fearn as Kathy Carter, Anthony (To The Manor Born) Sharp as Commander "Jack" Frost, John Barrett, Michael Ripper, Patrick Mower, Harry Fowler, Colin Douglas and Gerald Harper.

*Like most of their films together, the film merely serves as a device for Flanagan & Allen to deliver some of their well heeled stage routines and to provide a number of musical interludes. In this film Flanagan suffers a bump on the head, and whilst being operated on he has a number of totally unrelated dreams. The best musical number is "Dreaming".Whilst in my opinion the best films featuring the pair are those that they did with the Crazy Gang for Gainsborough nevertheless this is a very likable and entertaining film which is a pleasant memory of a legendary pair of entertainers. There are some other interesting faces in the cast including a cameo by the famous jockey Sir Gordon Richards. ** Mr. and Mrs. Average British Family...if the average British family consists of a husband, wife, widowed daughter and an adventurous son...go to a holiday camp, and encounter many people who are there for various and sundry reasons; a young, unmarried couple who are about to become parents sans wedlock; a sadist eluding Scotland Yard and looking for more sadist activities; a husband-seeking spinster; two would-be gamblers looking just to make expenses; and a middle-aged matron on her first holiday after years of taking care of her invalid mother. Quite a good script.Fun.

*This story is set at a bording school...the sort of place that used to be popular for middle class and up and coming families. The one here has a headmaster that simply accepts no discussion from his staff and he treats them like the pupils.
Into this fascist sort of environment arrives a new teacher, Mr. Traill. Traill is fresh out of the military but is a rather decent and laid back guy. This is a problem, as his superior, Mr. Perrin is a very rigid and small-minded man. Traill's manners and style rub him wrong...and Perrin takes an almost immediate dislike for him. Finishing up the term here is going to be very difficult and you assume sooner or later, something has to give as the tension is so obvious that the kids pick up on it. The ending to this tale is very shocking and a bit surprise. I also loved the scene just after this between Traill and the headmaster...it's very welcome.
Overall, an extremely well acted and enjoyable character study that is well worth your time. IMDB
