Odd title I know, but I was wondering if anyone feels the presence of a lost loved one. Maybe talk to them, as if they are still listening. We lost our 9 year old grandaughter some years ago and each time we take flowers to the crematorium my wife sits and talks to her where we scattered her ashes. I respect that it makes her feel better for doing that but being realistic I know that thousands more ashes have been spread there since. I was just wondering what others feel about this. I can't believe in an afterlife, but I won't find that out hopefully for a while yet.

I just don't know I am not religious so that path holds nothing for me, after all if there is a heaven where this all forgiving Jesus awaits I can't believe that those who don't believe would be turned away. But then if you consider the universe, how vast it is, and where does it end assuming it does, maybe our souls just move on to another planet When people die they usually have a happy look on their faces but I think this is just relaxation from whatever they were suffering from There was a recent drawing from a man who "died" for a few minutes but was revived. He drew what he claimed to have seen, I can't find a link sadly You have made an interesting post here, none of us are spring chickens and it is something to think about

Like you Jimmy I'm not religious now. I was brought up as a choir boy and church every Sunday. But, since I took an interest in astronomy my tells me that there must be life somewhere in the billions of galaxies apart from the billions of stars in our own milky way. At a young age we are taught about religion but never about the over 8 million species on our own planet. It's possible to live in the air as birds do, it's possible to live underground as moles and ants do. It's possible to live in the sea as fish do. Who's to say that there are species who can live on planets without oxygen or any other element. It is more likely that the millions of species on our planet have been brought here by someone being as it was a ball of fire some billions of years ago. I believe in UFO's though I'm inclined to believe in Steven Hawkins theory that they could possibly be from our future as the next step in evolution in quantum mechanics is as time travel. Hawkins said it is scientifically impossible to go to the future as it hasn't happened, however one day it will be possible to travel into the past.

I believe in an afterlife, call me weird, but I really think that there is something else beyond this life we live. Buddhists, Sikhs and Hindus all believe in the continuous circle of birth, life and rebirth.
As a a child I would have a continuous nightmare about being on train that stopped just before it went across a viaduct, we were made to get out and lie on the ground. I was with my father ( he didn’t look like my own father yet I knew he was in the dream) in the dream I looked up and there were these low flying planes shooting at the train. I always woke up screaming at this point and this dream went on for a period of years.
Now I can hear you saying things like being impressionable, watching war films etc, however when these dreams were happening we lived in Pakistan with no telly and I was 4 years old when they started.
I’m dysgraphic so my command of the English language with spellings etc can often be haphazard, as well as memory issues so I’ve always found learning a different language almost impossible. Now in my dreams I can speak fluent French....how is that possible without prior knowledge?

Wow!! Thanks for sharing that with us and I thoroughly believe you. Have you ever told your family members in case they could throw any light on it?

There are many reported cases of people having a recurring dream that suggests previous experiences, I can never remember if I had a dream never mind the content! There are also reported cases of people visiting new places and realising that they recognise the place and must have been there before Makes you wonder

These dreams happened regularly until I was about 8, my parents knew about them because I had tried to explain. As for now, my immediate family think I’m highly ‘sensitive’ and poopoos the whole idea.
I do get feelings though, we were once viewing a flat in Edinburgh when house hunting, it had been done up and was looking lovely. As I stood in the hallway on the flagstone floor a horrid feeling of severe unhappiness came over me which then followed me from room to room. When I left the building so did the feeling. MrN is quite open to my foibles 😄

I had a recurrring dream during my earlyish childhood. I had severe blood poisoning when I was 18mths old and spent 6 weeks in hospital. From about the age of four my dream night after night was me in a cot at the top of a steep incline (the steep incline was our local library by the way) hurtling down but always woke up before reaching the bottom. I didn't have the dream after about 6 years old but I still remember it vividly.

The thing is, as far as I know, nobody has ever come back and announced their presence It would be nice to think that as we depart this world we would be able to "keep and ere" and see how our young grand and great grand children develop, and if that "b****y" plum tree we planted ever did bear fruit!

I saw a documentary on the life of Houdini and before he died he told his wife Bess that the greatest fete was yet to come, If there was any way of making contact wither after his death, he would find it. Bess attended endless Seances but never heard from him again.

Not sure there can be a physical one because no-one has sent an email yet to tell us what it's like being dead but if there was an afterlife I would like to come back as a woman - just to see what it's like, you know.

I used to be a Christian and at that time I believed in the after life. As I have learned more about space and the cosmos,I think it's highly unlikely that there is anything after this life. I would dearly like to believe it's possible. When my sister was dying of cancer ,when she was 46,we talked about this a lot. She always said she would come back as a butterfly. About 3 or 4 weeks after her death,I went out to put washing on my line and there was a butterfly on the line. I carried on putting the washing on the line and the butterfly did not move. I suppose it's fanciful,to think it may have been her,but it cheered me up that day. That was 22 years ago and I still think of her every day. I still miss her. She was a wonderful person who helped so many people in her counselling work. There were over 400 people at the funeral. Many people had to stand outside the church and listen to the service through a loudspeaker. I often feel her with me.though I know I'm just remembering things she would say or do. I think ,if it comforts us to think they may hear us,we should talk to them. There's no harm in that.

Great post Althea. There aren't many days that go by without me having a wee word with my dad. Whether you believe in the afterlife or not, if it gives comfort then where's the harm?
I still regard myself as a Catholic - lapsed for many years. There were too many things I disagreed with within the Church and as we all have free will I decided it wasn't for me. I would love to think that one day, when I die obviously, I would meet up with friends and family once again.
