I took care not to read the French (Actually, I didn't notice it, and thought McQueen was Paul Newman about to eat the boiled eggs until I saw the army cap the bloke in the middle was wearing.) I do not know the new one, though it does look a bit saucy.

It is French, yes. Directed by the son of a famous painter.
I was really pleased with myself for recognising the bloke in another French film called Les suspects.

The director is right, but A Day in the Country is B&W, and about 20 years earlier than this one.
It has the same title as a famous painting (not Renoir), that was copied by Bow Wow Wow for an LP (or maybe single) cover.
