Idly looking through the list of forum members and being insatiably curious - nosey, some would say - by nature, I began to wonder how or why some of you chose your forum names. Mine - The Janitor - is very straight forward and comes from my work at Tangmere where, having started as a guide followed by 2 years as the Education Officer, I'm now the Deputy Curator (Projects). If that sounds impressive, I can assure you the only thing that is really is the job title itself but it does mean I have an excuse to play with all the toys such as the flight simulators - just to make sure everything's working OK you understand. Anyway, Pete Cross, one of my fellow Angel Radio presenters thought it would be a jolly jape to tell the listeners that I was actually the janitor at Tangmere who wore a flat cap, brown overall coat and went around sweeping the hangar floors with a fag dangling from my mouth and the name just stuck. Well, that's me but why, for example, ARENA or scorp? I think we should be told! Over to you...

Norty by name, norty by nature. ;D Many years ago it was Norton, tad manly but I got the name from the Norton's Shakespeare Collection from which I was studying at the time. A couple of members from the BBC message boards called me Norts or Norty for short, so I changed it.

H B Morton, otherwise known as 'Beachcomber', wrote some pieces about a number of red-bearded dwarves, who were very litigious: as an example of this, in their guise as manufacturers of rocking horses they sued themselves as proprietors of a laundy because they had shrunk some rocking horse manes...
Their names were : Sophus Barkayo-Tong, Amaninter Axling, Farjole Merrybody, Guttergorm Guttergormpton, Badly Oronparser, Churm Rincewind, Cleveland Zackhouse, Molonay Tubilderborst, Edeledel Edel, Scorpion de Rooftrouser, Listenis Youghaupt, Frums Gillygottle.
I fell about when I encountered Scorpion de Rooftrouser and appropriated it as a user name - that's all. Elsewhere I am feetlebaum or Dirk Dogstoerd (from Spike Jones and Philip Larkin sources).
Churm Rincewind, by the way, was lurking in Sir Terry Pratchett's unconscious when he created his inept wizard, Rincewind. It seems his father had read Beachcomber to him when a child!

ARENA - a little cryptic. norty - very logical. scorp - well, I did ask! Incidentally, I don't know if you're a Radio 4 Extra listener scorp but 'Beachcomber... By The Way' with Richard Ingrams, John Wells, Patricia Routledge, John Sessions and Brian Perkins is regularly repeated on that excellent station. TJ

I'm miffed! Nobody wants to know about me! I wanted to be Lilolill on the old Beeb boards but someone already had that so they offered me Starlilolill and it has stuck! Lilolill from 'Bread' - always made me giggle!
