When I was one of the club who drank in the Cheshire Cheese off Fleet Street, I was very partial to Marston's Excelsior..........

Dartmoor breweries Jail Ale is pretty good, but it is all down to a good landlord who regularly cleans his pipes, and serves it at the right temperature in a glass that has no hint of detergent left in it.

Old Peculi er - it's an old ecclesiastical rank, the Peculier. St Austell brew some good stuff, don't they? When I was in Cornwall in the 1960s it was - OK - the pubs offered Boys' or Diesel! Is Old Hooky a Hook Norton brew? I was taken to their brewery once, in the 1970s - fascinating, with an old steam engine poweriing everything - as far as I know it still does. Seems to have had a lick of paint since I saw it!

Old Hokey is indeed a Hook Norton ale and with a power plant a beautiful as that at the heart of the brewery it's no wonder it tastes as good as it does.

Ridiculous, I know, but somehow a steam engine stirs me emotionally! Partly because of the beautiful engineering and craftsmanship, but also because, as has been said many times, they almost seem to be alive, breathing and snorting... and no two are alike in their handling.

Partly because of the beautiful engineering and craftsmanship, but also because, as has been said many times, they almost seem to be alive, breathing and snorting... and no two are alike in their handling. They are works of art even more than they are wonders of engineering - each one an individual masterpiece. Any firm that is prepared to put the effort required to keep one of them running as part of their day to day operation deserves our support.
