I do love Melton Mowbray pork pies. Well, really I like all pies. I cant eat pastry often, so I save myself for the occasional MM pork pie with HP sauce. My stomach and I have done a deal, it will behave itself if I never eat chillies or fried food again and rarely eat pastry. I won't say I struggle with my weight, because that implies I actually made an effort at some time.

You are absolutely right,Maris. When my mother taught me to cook, she said that if I used the oven I had to fill it, otherwise I was being wasteful. So I made many, many custard tarts to go the bottom of the oven while other foods were cooking, higher up. My children always had egg custards and custard tarts,so much so, that nowadays they won't eat them.

I often buy pork pies and Steak pies and just eat the inside and throw the pastry away.

I bet if your oven isn't full, you feel guilty as well 😄 Any rejected custard tarts to me, please. A propos the pork pie, I picked one up in Waitrose yesterday. It was a proper Melton Mowbray with an 'appellation controlee' stamp on it proving it was baked there. I looked at the calories/fat... I put it back. Regretting it now, reading about pies again. What is it about 'em that's so wonderful? I should think they are a British invention...

Maris, are you sure that you and I weren't separated at birth? If you like brandy and chocolate, (I do) I would guess we were .
