Yes,the Melton Mowbray pork pie takes some beating (purchased THERE though, not supermarket) - it's the cold water lard pastry (swoon) Actually, I like my own deconstructed steak pie. That is, I roll the pastry out and cook it separately so that you get a crispy slice of it on top of your meat/gravy. Mmmmm....
On a pastry note, the French are always butter, and often egg as well. I think the English half butter/lard/ plus water is king.

Savoury pies yes it would be Melton Mowbray. The ones from M&S are the nicest I can find.

There is an amazing pie shop in Richmond Yorkshire, they do pork pies topped with apple or cranberries. They are delicious!
