I'm very partial to a bit of Chinese. Not so keen on the Indian stuff a bit too spicy for me.

Today's Indian restaurants are a heck of a lot different from the ones of twenty or thirty years ago - or at least some are. No doubt the gaffs that cater for the 'Hottest thing on the menu'after-pub yobs are still there, with their red flock wallpaper peeling in the capsaicin fumes... More modern restaurants provide food that isn't completely masked by the spicing used, but with the flavours of the main ingredients just enhanced by the aromatics and spices. Yum.
Chinese seems to have changed too - I haven't seen a chow mein for decades - instead we have the delights of crisp(y) duck, their wonderful spare ribs - and nothing has a fried egg on top. Remember the days of the [restaurant name here] Special - usually a chow mein with a fried egg perched on it? How the hell do you eat a fried egg with chop sticks?
PS: Both Indian and Chinese leftovers are great out of the fridge for breakfast...

Do you remember the habit Chinese restaurants once had of calling themselves the "<Something> Temple"?
In the early 70s, while I was briefly based at Birmingham Airport, we lived on the Stratford Road in the Solihull district of Shirley. Our local Chinese was called the "Shirley Temple". ;D
Never did know if they got the joke but, apparently, it's still going strong.

Yep, that's the one - 156-158 Stratford Road. We lived in a flat above a jewellers at 230 Stratford Rd. There was a local Chinese restaurant that was prosecuted while we were there when cut up Alsatian dogs were found in the kitchens but, as they're still going strong, it couldn't have been them! TJ
