We need to pick the cooking apples off our tree. I hope my daughter will be up for it on Sunday when she comes. Then I'll be stewing apples for apple sauce and making pies and crumbles. I can't eat pastry, so it is a labour of love for me. My husband loves apple pie. I have just taken a large piece of cod out of the freezer to thaw. I think I will mix fresh breadcrumbs with cheese and form a layer over the fish, then grill it until it forms a sort of crust. I think we'll have sweet potato chips with it, or maybe mashed potato.

Stop it Althea! You are making me feel hungry! Sadly most of my apples went in the gales of a couple of days ago and there are far more windfalls than I can eat or give away. And I only have a small freezer. Pears are OK though, and there are a lot of them.

We had a lot of pears this year. Any that weren't perfect were peeled and poached in lemonade. I used to make pear wine, apple wine and damson wine at our old place. There was so much fruit.
