Brilliant win for Adam Peaty combined with a world record with Jazz Carlin earning a Silver medal in her race. Lizzie Armitstead missed out on a medal in her road race but personally I couldn't have celebrated if she had got a medal. You can get most of it on the blue button, but are often met with long silences and pretty crap coverage and commentary. I will be watching some but confess that the glitter has gone from it, and I don't know why. Maybe because it is now so professional. When I competed, and it was never at anywhere near this level it was strictly amateur, well maybe. We knew that the Eastern block people were 'in the army' and all they did was train all day. So far nothing has grabbed my attention and now there are so many minor sports creeping in.

The other competitors were very disparaging about her competing...two missed drug tests and no questions? It's not on. What I noticed was how empty of spectators many events seem to be and even the Olympic site itself has a barren look to it. Makes you question the logic of awarding (definitely the wrong word) to poor nations. It cripples them. And legacy (another misnomer) - what's the legacy of our own games? A deserted site, the gift of a stadium, paid for by the taxpayer, to a premiership club, a decrease in the participation of sport by youngsters... Hold in, this isn't even the moan thread. I must be stuck in a groove...

In some sports, they are truly amateur sportsmen, but when you see the likes of Andy Murray there...what?

What do you mean? We got a Helter-Skelter out of it. Anish kapoor took a dim view of that!. It originally cost £19m and was losing£10,000 a week. Nobody wanted to go up for the view and there's still no queue to go down it on the installed slide.

It's always the case that these publically funded buildings and projects that promise huge incomes fail to deliver Look at the number that have used Lottery funds for example that have closed already or are struggling to survive You would think that those involved in allocating these funds would be more careful

Maybe it should be held in Greece every 4 years, and all participating nations pay for it!

^^^ And everyone has to do it naked. More people will watch then. Anyway, the olympic spirit in full flow (maybe a response to athletes not being allowed to tweet about their victories etc using Rio or the olympics logo - has Sepp Blatter joined the IOC?): Oh and another one, because someone put it on the Fall site:

Amazing how many people the TV companies have managed to find who are related to, have connections with, or once met the competitors Am waiting for the former boyfriend/girlfriend to do a "Kiss and Tell" story

Silver in the Rugby 7s!!! Brilliant. Mind you Fiji were formidable so well deserved gold. I bet even Princess Anne was taken aback at their kneeling though! Great, great sport 😁

I stayed up for that! Seems Fiji adopted the simple tactic of not letting the ball go to ground. what stopped England doing the same?? 41/5 is annihilation
