Social housing was meant to be for people on low incomes who couldn't afford to buy. In many cases, people would get better jobs,or have grown up children working and their income would rise, but they would still stay in social housing. In America, you get cheap housing, and if your income improves, then you have to move out and pay rent that is not subsidised by the tax payer. There will always be a need for low cost housing,so the govt. should not have sold council houses. Poor housing has a knock on effect in many ways.It can affect health and education in children.

They are members of of the family, which is why you should be humane enough to have them put down when they're too ill get any enjoyment out of life. My dog kept having fits too (she did not like them but she was really hungry afterwards), and her eyes were going and she was really stiff, so I did have her put down. I did not enjoy it, and I still miss her, after 25 years. Our last two cats were put down as well (both had tumours or some sort), and the cat before (kidney failure). It was horrible but it did have to be done.

Gus, you relate a most sensible approach which I wish more people showed. Funnily enough, a relative of mine had an Irish Setter which was also completely unpredictable. Beautiful, but not to be trusted. A dog is an animal that deserves care, respect and caution.

My moan of the day...runner beans!! When I was a youngster, we were overrun with the things. In fact, we used to salt and layer them in jars to eat yet more of them during the winter. I got heartily sick of those beans. Now I crave them but they are as rare as hens teeth. Granted, I don't grow them like my dad and grandfather did, but I went into Aldi (which should be cheap) and got about five beans for 1.20 !!!

England Football Association. They pay such frugal wages to their managers that they have to do a bit of moonlighting.

Our lass does a great thing that we have with mushroom biryani, involving scrambled eggs and runner beans (and I suppose some spices).
