Thank you for the welcome, Arena. Choccy cake looks yummy!
I'm on the Costa del Sol, sweltering still in the heat, and really had enough now after a record breaking August.

I'm a resident, gus. Have been since '82. Been an improvement in the tourism this summer - probably because so many usual destinations are off the menu due to terrorism fears. Long time since I've been out of the business now, but nice to see the place busy again.
Thanks for the welcome. Like the chef's outfit!

Hi everyone.
You're right, marispiper - was on the old BBC POV Board. Remember you too. I do live on the Costa del Sol. Long-term resident. And it's certainly lived up to the "del Sol" bit this summer. Would kill for a nice, big storm to blow in across the Straits of Gib!

Ha, the chefs outfit follows on from successfully giving MP advice on how to make perfect Yorkshire puds Lucky you being a resident in Spain, would give my right arm to live in Benidorm but am scared of health costs. At my age the needs seem to grow every year, I know there is a supposed agreement with the Spanish government to provide free health care for UK pensioners but how long will that continue now Brexit is under way. There have even been cases of the Spanish demanding money up front already If things get awkward here may well just grasp the bullet and sell up and move anyway

I don't think much will change for British pensioners in Spain for a while yet. The Spanish would be shooting themselves in the foot if they made life difficult for us, resulting in mass exodus. On this part of the Coast, without the British pension spending power and employment of locals in the winter when the tourists go home, the whole area would suffer very badly economically. There's huge unemployment here - in excess of 40% of young people are without a job. There are also I think about 350,000 Spanish nationals living in the UK, and if there were to be retaliation, the return of all these people looking for a job or needing support would be catastrophic for Spain. The difference in pensioner contribution and younger people wanting employment is massive. The pensioner doesn't have children to be educated, he doesn't ask for income support, and brings enormous spending power with him. He usually has his own home, and doesn't need help with his accommodation costs. He provides employment for a lot of the local population too. When the tourists go home, if we were not here, many of the local shops would close due to lack of demand, and the jobs of those supporting the homes/gardens/painting/plumbing etc. would also struggle. There is the medical question, but many Brits take out private insurance to ensure an English speaking doctor, so perhaps not as big a drain as portrayed.
If you fancy giving it a try, gus, I would say do it. If it doesn't work out, then you just go home! It is a pleasant way of life, but like everywhere else, there's good and bad, and you even get sick of the heat and the sun!
