Mary the Elephant, who was publicly executed for killing her handler, 1916. On September 11, 1916, a hobo named Red Eldridge who landed a job as a transient hotel janitor was hired as an assistant elephant trainer by the Sparks World Famous Shows circus. He was killed by Mary in Sullivan County, Tennessee, on the evening of September 12. Eldridge led the elephant parade, although he was not qualified, riding on the top of Mary's back; Mary was the star of the show, riding at the front. There have been several accounts of his death. One, recounted by W.H. Coleman who claimed to be a witness, is that he prodded her behind the ear with a hook after she reached down to nibble on a watermelon rind. She went into a rage, snatched Eldridge with her trunk, threw him against a drink stand and stepped on his head, crushing it.

Yes: and sometimes they don't ever stop communicating, except when they're asleep.

In our block (on the other wing), one flat used to have a cat flap that had written on it in black felt tip: DEAR BLACK CAT - PLEASE BOG OFF

If a man jumped out of an aeroplane at 30,000 feet it would take him around 3.5 minutes to fall to the ground.
If a spider did the same thing it would take it several weeks to fall to the ground and it would have a gentle landing. Trouble is it would have taken so long it would not remember where it lived.....

Since the birth of the commercially available transistor, during at the earliest the late 50's there have been more transistors made than single letters of type ever printed since the invention of the printing press.
(I got that from a Reith lecture some years ago)
