I once used the Robertson's Golly as an avatar on the SAGA forum... they asked me to take it down. So I got the needle, and never went back again! In Joe Orton's What The Butler Saw someone making Green Gollywogs, for reasons of political correctness, may be certified as insane...my American edition has 'tarbabies' instead of 'gollywogs'! My auntie knitted a golly for me over 60 years ago. I still have him and will never part with him. He sits proudly in his chair and I don't care who sees him or whether anyone objects.

I learnt to drive on one of these, aged 14. A blue one. A passenger could sit on the mudguard, and I suspect the engine timing was a bit out because you could lean over and light your fags on the exhaust pipe! I discovered what cold was like after a few hours rolling or harrowing a field. My husband refurbished an old grey Ferguson tractor about ten years ago. He was not happy to sell it when we moved here four years ago. We used to live in the countryside and had a large garden(a third of an acre or so), we also had a couple of steam engines and a car trailer.Plus we had a couple of trailers of different sizes. OH had a ride on mower, and so much stuff in the garage that I had to tie a rope round his waist when he went in there. Four years ago,I put my foot down and said we needed to downsize. It was such a relief for the children who would have had to sort everything out when we croaked. It was a huge job, moving, but we needed to be near to amenities in case driving became a problem. It made life much easier and we only moved two miles to the nearest little town. We moved into the road where OH's parents used to live, his cousin lives over the road and his other cousin used to live next door.
