Dear Supporters of Film and TV History,
Thank you to all of you who gave us feedback on this new e-newsletter – it seems a weekly reminder of what's on in the week ahead has been well received. Bob the projectionist is very pleased! It’s a great week as usual on Talking Pictures TV with two new series starting and a host of film premieres.
Highlights for the week beginning Monday 24th February 2020
MONDAY 24th February
Two Boulting brothers films air today; at 2:15pm the 60s crime comedy Rotten to the Core (1965) stars Anton Rodgers, Eric Sykes and Charlotte Rampling. After 18 months in jail a gang of robbers are released, eager to receive their share of the stash. They are told that their leader is dead and the money gone, however this is not quite the case… Later at 6:10pm a darker kind of crime story as Richard Attenborough stars with Hermione Baddeley and William Hartnell in Brighton Rock, (1947). Adapted from his own novel by Graham Greene, together with Terence Rattigan, this great British thriller, beautifully shot in black and white with nostalgic locations in Brighton, does complete justice to the book. In the evening at 10pm and also on Saturday 29th February at 10:50pm That’ll Be The Day (1973) stars David Essex, Ringo Starr and Rosemary Leach. Wayward hero Jim MacLaine lives a life of dead-end jobs and one-night stands and dreams of becoming a rock star. Many of the characters were played by musicians who were alive in the era portrayed in the film including Ringo Starr of the Beatles, Billy Fury, Keith Moon of the Who and John Hawken of the Nashville Teens.
TUESDAY 25th February
Jack Warner stars in The Final Test (1954) at 12:05pm with Robert Morley and George Relph. In this charming light comedy about the father-son relationship an England cricketer looks forward to his last test match; but his son would rather write poetry than watch. At 7:15pm classic British comedy Two Way Stretch (1960) stars Peter Sellers, David Lodge and Bernard Cribbins. The perfect crime is planned by a gang who intend to break out of prison, steal a fortune in diamonds, and break back into prison, thus creating a foolproof alibi. The wonderful supporting cast includes Wilfrid Hyde-White, Lionel Jeffries, Irene Handl, Liz Fraser, Beryl Reid, Warren Mitchell and Arthur Mullard. A new series begins at 9pm, Reilly, Ace of Spies (1983), a spy drama, starring Sam Neill, Leo McKern, Norman Rodway and Peter Egan. Based on the true story of Russian-born Sidney Reilly, who became one of the greatest spies ever to work for the British, this brilliant series was an astonishing success when first shown. Continues on Tuesdays at 9pm.
WEDNESDAY 26th February
At 9:35am Anna Neagle stars in Nell Gwyn (1934), a period drama telling the story of King Charles’ favourite mistress and a celebrated actress of the time. Jack Warner stars again at 12:05pm in Bang! You’re Dead with Derek Farr, Veronica Hurst and Michael Medwin. Two small boys find a gun and play with it, not realising it is loaded, with tragic consequences. 1960s crime drama Walk a Tightrope (1963) is on at 7.25pm, starring Dan Duryea, Patricia Owens and Terence Cooper. A woman is blackmailed by her former husband, as their marriage was not annulled.
THURSDAY 27th February
Glynis Johns stars in Mad About Men (1954) at 7:15pm, a comedy with Donald Sinden, Anne Crawford and Margaret Rutherford. A prim and pretty schoolteacher meets Miranda, a mermaid, while on holiday. As they look alike, Miranda decides she wants to swap places, with some interesting results! Later, at 9pm, the second new series of the week begins: Funny Man (1980), starring Jimmy Jewel, Jean Boht and David Schofield with Sharon Duce, Pamela Stephenson, Trudie Styler and Lynda Bellingham. The series follows the fortunes of a family of music-hall entertainers and is based on the experience of the company of players founded by Jewel’s father in the 1920s. Continues on Thursdays at 9pm.
FRIDAY 28th February
Jack Warner stars again, in Against The Wind (1948) at 7pm, this time with Robert Beatty, Simone Signoret, Gordon Jackson, Paul Dupuis and James Robertson Justice. At the height of the Second World War, a group of men and women are gathered together in London to be trained as spies. Director Charles Crichton portrays the human story, conveying a sense of the danger and sacrifice made by the brave people who fought for freedom during World War II. On Friday evening at 10pm, prepare to be thrilled by The Mummy’s Shroud (1967) starring André Morell, Michael Ripper, Elizabeth Sellars & David Buck. An Ancient Egyptian curse descends on the doomed members of an archaeological expedition in this entertaining Hammer film.
SATURDAY 29th February
A film for all the family on Saturday morning, at 8:45am, from the Children’s Film Foundation: Sammy’s Super T-Shirt (1978). A comedy, starring Reggie Winch, Lawrie Mark, Richard Vernon, Julian Holloway and Patsy Rowlands in which a little boy stands up to his tormentors via the device of a magical T-shirt. On Saturday afternoon at 3:50pm Alastair Sim stars in An Inspector Calls (1954) with Bryan Forbes, Eileen Moore, Olga Lindo and Arthur Young. Adapted from the play by J. B. Priestley, a police inspector arrives to interview every member of the rich and complacent Birling family whose pampered lives are about to change forever. At tea time on Saturday at 5:30pm Portrait of Clare (1950) tells of the lives and loves of a woman as she recounts them to her grand-daughter. Set in Yorkshire, the film stars Margaret Johnston, Richard Todd, Robin Bailey, Ronald Howard, Mary Clare and Marjorie Fielding.
SUNDAY 1st March
The Lady With A Lamp (1951) features at 2:15pm, starring Anna Neagle, Michael Wilding and Gladys Young. Anna Neagle gives one of her finest performances in this moving portrayal of Florence Nightingale’s fight to improve conditions for soldiers wounded in the Crimean War. On Sunday evening at 7:10pm, the delightful comedy Simon and Laura (1955) stars Peter Finch, Kay Kendall and Muriel Pavlow. A TV studio want to feature a famous couple in a new show, however, in private they argue and throw things at each other – will they be able to maintain a happy façade for the cameras? The week finishes on an entertaining note with Sunday Night at the London Palladium (1965) at 9pm. This week’s show features: Frankie Vaughan, singer Edmund Hockridge, pop band The Searchers, singer Susan Lane, actress Sarah Miles, folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary and a rare glimpse of those much loved comedians, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.
