I think it all depends on the phlebotomist who' s taking the blood. Some do mine no problem, other struggle usually blaming you for not drinking enough Was just the same when I was in hospital where they were taking blood morning and afternoon

During training we were taught to gently slap the patients arm to find a prominent vein, but they changed that as it could be akin to assault. So it was changed to ask the patient to drink a few glasses of water. So many things changed before I retired, we weren't allowed to call a patient love or dear.

I have only one arm for taking blood too. As jimmy says, some phlebotomists are better than others.

Had a problem with my stoma so on Monday I phoned the stoma clinic for advice. They suggested I consult my GP so I imagined I would get an appointment in weeks time. To my astonishment the first appointment was "tomorrow at 11 am" Saw the GP yesterday, he had a medical student with him so I had a thorough examination, blood sample taken, and a tutorial given for the student Is this the new Boris Johnson NHS

In fairness I have to add that in the last four years I have had two separate cancer diagnoses, both were dealt with immediately with surgery with a successful outcome requiring no further treatment. With my history I suppose they take no chances with me, but it shows how effective the system can be for serious cases

I moan about our surgery a lot,but at times of emergency they are brilliant. I'm having a pain day today,my hip and knee are both playing up something chronic. I got up in the night to take a codeine and just walked round the house until it kicked in. My husband doesn't understand, bless him. He keeps asking me if I'm all right,so I say yes each time . He gets agitated if things are not the same every day. We have been inundated with offers of different gadgets and ways to help with his dementia, but sadly we have passed the stage where any of it is useful to him.

I had a really bad morning with OH today. He has forgotten how to open the front door and which key to use. He couldn't open it,so he forced it and then it would not lock. It's UPVC. I shouted at him to leave it alone and he ignored me and got very aggressive.I felt helpless and totally not able to control the situation. I know it's not him,it's the disease, but I was really panicking. I have various numbers to ring from different help organisations,so I rang one and they put me on hold for several minutes. So I rang a different number and got to talk to someone who was really helpful. She got in touch with my doctor, who phoned me and was brilliant. She and I have devised a plan for OH's INR nurse (who he knows well and likes) to give him some tablets next week when it's his appointment. They will be a mild sedative and will hopefully calm him down. The advice from all the help agencies, including the doc,is to ring 999 and get the police to come if I feel unsafe. It is heartbreaking to get to this stage of events.I have realised that I'm not going to be able to cope much longer. My daughter has managed to get the door to lock again. It's not quite right, but at least it locks. Last time, OH broke the handle off the bathroom window because he couldn't remember how to shut it and used brute force once again. No one said life was easy.
