It demeaned women who have been put into that situation by a powerful person, it demeaned John Humpry, it demeaned Gove himself for making an off the cuff remark that showed how ignorant he is of the Weinstein issue to women. Is it ok to make jokes about child abuse? No Is it ok to make jokes about domestic abuse? No So why is it ok to make jokes about sexual harassment and abuse? As for not being able to smile at a woman or child anymore, that is you being utterly ridiculous. Try redressing the balance by not making light of the above, try redressing the balance by owning behaviour of men who should know better, try redressing the balance by treating everybody with respect. You can joke about anything; it's not the subject that's the problem but the joke, or the target of the joke.

Black comedians used to revel in humour about black people as a very effective way to highlight and diffuse the situation It is always those without a sense of humour who complain

This is when you get the powerful making jokes about the powerless, based on a long-lasting set of inaccurate stereotype, which have always been believed by a significant proportion of the population and have also been used against black people in general: Slavery was justified in part by the claim that black people were not fully human, and people still argue that they are not as intelligent as white people: you see white people in effect boasting about having the same skin colour as Shakespeare I've seen this joke repeated on facebook, as a joke, not as an example of racism. It's the same as the jokes about Jews being mean were just a part of the anti-Semitism that led to the Holocaust: jokes are important. I had an example of a good race joke, but it's gone now. Maybe later.

It is always those without a sense of humour who complain The powerful can use their power for the wrong reasons, it is always those who refuse to realise this and that there is a problem which enables the problem to continue.

Administrating a forum....
It's a matter of pleasing all the participants.
Your strong views can upset other members . You will not know ,unless the administrator takes action, as the gripes all come in the form of private messages to the admin.
Could I ask members to play nicely.Remember you are what makes the board or destroys it.
Thank you for your consideration.

Problems arise when those strong views upset those with opposing views who run and complain to the moderators/administrators. If this results in threads being closed or posters punished it is an effective form of censorship

Personally I don't think there are taboo subjects as long as no one targets or bullies another poster. Surely on here we are all of a certain age to be able to discuss all matters and in some cases agreeing to disagree. The abuse thing is getting out of hand with so many celebrities now being targeted and in many cases events from 30 or 40 years being mentioned. Makes me wonder if Sooty and Sweep are going to moan about Harry Corbett putting his hands up their backsides.

What if you are a shrinking violet? What if it's your first job and you're scared of losing it (and getting sanctioned by the job centre because you got sacked)? What do you do then?

I don't think that "shrinking violets" generally pursue a career in politics and the film and music industry. Also I think that the days of being unable to complain in job centres and other work places are long gone. The current employment legislation and emphasis on HR departments has seen an end to all that

You don't get any money from the DWP because you have made yourself unemployed. You appeal. That takes weeks. Take the company to a tribunal - takes months. All the time you have no income, no reference. (Don't you know that Job Centres have quotas that they use to sanction claimants?) This is why people put up with it: not because they're ok with it, but because they have no choice.

I don't believe that, that is how it used to be Look at the Coronation St actor, charged over such an assault - immediately sacked. Employers do not like the bad stench associated with such claims, and take swift action to avoid bad publicity, compensation claims and tribunals
