Tinned toms, tinned beans ( baked, kidney, mixed been) tuna and Devonshire custard! I like both home made and tinned rice pudding and will eat it from the tin with a tea spoon if I'm on my own. Yum

I have quite a few different cans in my cupboard. Tinned concentrated chicken or mushroom soup makes a decent addition to a chicken casserole. Tinned toms also go into various things. B Beans are always handy but I prefer Branston beans. And kidney beans or butter beans are good in a casserole as well. But other tinned veg such as peas carrots and spuds I avoid.
People who tell you they always cook everything from scratch are probably not telling the truth.

These bloody Branston Beans...a Scottish friend of ours told us they were the business! Searched everywhere, found them in Tesco, bought FOUR tins...disgusting!

Branston beans are not to my taste either. You can't beat the good old Heinz or even supermarket ones, anything bar Branston.

I like them and they used to be a lot more expensive than 'Other leading brands' when they first appeared on the shelves.

Before I get on with other things I will tell you a tale.
As a very young man I did a job at Crosse & Blackwell at their factory in S London. I was not long married and one could buy all the misshapes and rejects in the 'shop' for next to nothing. You could (and I did) fill the boot for a couple of pounds. There were no labels on the tins so you needed to know the codes. BLB for example was blue beans, or baked beans as we know them.
However I digress. The tins were made on site and it was all on a gravity system. After the tins were made they came down into the filling area upside down via a strange shaped conveyor, four metal rails which were deliberately wavy from side to side like a sine wave, and those rails were mechanically shaken up and down to keep the tins moving. The noise was deafening.
In the middle of the floor sat a lady o a stool, looking up at the never ending procession of tins above her head, and every once in a while she would spring into action and very deftly poke a misshaped tin out of the conveyor. Misshaped tins would jam the filling carousel and the floor was absolutely littered with bent and buggered tins.
I commented to one of the engineers that she perhaps had the worst noisiest and most boring job on the planet. He smiled and told me she had been doing the job for seven years and despite repeated attempts to move her to something else she had refused. She just sat there, all on her own in a little world of her own poking bent tins.

I can remember when those Fray Bentos pies first came out. We thought we were the beesknees when we had one of those. I didn't know they were still available.

In the past I have hidden tins of kidney beans and borlotti beans, and many others I can't think of now, in my cupboards. The reason being, my OH doesn't like beans in casseroles. As they are good for us, I used to add them secretly to all casseroles and stews. Never using enough that they showed up in the final dish. It was easy when he was working, but once he retired,I had to be extremely sneaky to do it undetected. I only add them occasionally now and buy and use the can immediately, so there is no evidence laying about.

I think this poem of mine is apt for this thread. I wrote it five years ago when I did indeed do a lot of cooking.
I am a Domestic Goddess my sponge cakes always rise. People have been known to drool over the pastry in my pies. My salad's always crispy and my biscuits too. My meringues are always light as air. They love my Irish stew. My dressings are always tangy. My steaks will always sizzle. My soft and fluffy puddings are finished with a creamy drizzle. My quiche is never soggy. My lettuce is never limp. My mouth- watering vol-au-vents Are always full of shrimp. My glasses always sparkle. My worktops always shine. My tableware all matches when you come to dine. But whenever I am home alone and feeding only me I always have a slice of toast on a tray across my knee.

Nice one:
Yes the Fray Bentos pies are still in the shops. They are handy to have in when you don't feel like cooking.
