Do you text? Is it good or bad for our language?

Occasionally I send a text message - very occasionally. I have one beloved chum (she was my first real girlfriend!) who resolutely won't have anything to do with email, but uses a cell phone, and I was persuaded by her to use it.
As to its effect on the language : dunno. I don't use the fashionable abbreviations, but text in standard English. With Skype it's easy to type the message using your normal keyboard - a vast improvement on the phone - no hitting '7' four times to type a simple 's'.

I use text a lot, it's handy. My friend and I exchange texts most days and we have such a laugh doing it, I wouldn't want to necessarily speak to her most days though.
My kids text if they're going to be late or plans change and it's so much cheaper than a quick phone call.

My son just explained N4Q2 I'm all ears, what does it mean? My friend and I are both dyslexic so our texts mean bugger all to others but we can read them perfectly!! ;D ;D

I text - it's very useful. Always use complete words and correct spelling and punctuation, so I'm a bit slow Although I don't use it, I think the abbreviated language the young'uns use is quite clever - just another stage in the never-ending process of evolving language. Didn't telegrams (if anyone remembers 'em!) use similarly truncated language?
